Closing Keynote Brunch :: Put the Right Vibe In Your Tribe w. Danica Kombol, EVERYWHERE Agency
Being a #GirlBoss is hard shit. And you don’t get there alone. I love the quote, “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of women who have her back.” I’ve always had a tribe, but guess what? It wasn’t always the right tribe, and unfortunately, I did not always realize I had the wrong posse until it was too late.

Then one day, I was at SXSW, and I got to hear Brené Brown in person. I’d listened to her podcasts a thousand times, but that day, I finally heard her. She said: “Be careful whose opinion you let matter,” and that one phrase – at that moment – hit me like a two-by-four on the side of my head. And in that moment, I realized that in building my business, in building my tribe, I had let too many people in and was listening to too many opinions.Really hearing Brené that day made me angry, made me inspired and made me realize that from that day forward, I would be super selective about my tribe. I started having imaginary conversations in my head with all these people who were offering thoughts and opinions on my business and my life. Today, I call them the “shoulda, coulda, wouldas.” In my fantasy confrontations I’d say, “Did you start your business in the height of the financial crisis? Did you climb out on a limb the way I did – with a mortgage to pay and college tuitions to cough up and with a husband who did not have a regular job? Did you decide to start a social media business with zero road map or financing? Did you EVER do anything as daring as that?” They did not and therefore they did not have a right to an opinion!

“You don’t find your tribe, you curate it.” That’s a lesson I learned the hard way. In this sometimes angry, sometimes vulnerable, hopefully inspirational keynote, I will implore this tribe that I love – the Blogalicious tribe – to think long and hard about who they are letting into their success headspace. I’ll also explore the classic archetypes of the kind of people who will try to steer you wrong if you let them. There are the “wanna be’s” – people who want to hang around you because they wanna be like you but all they do is drag you down. There are the “shoulders” – people who “should all over you but never do anything meaningful themselves. There are the distractors. People who distract you with ill-fate ideas. All together there are five archetypes of toxic tribe members you have to watch out for.

We’re women. We’re forgiving, we’re often emotionally leaky, and we have a tendency to let too many people in. But I will ask this audience to ponder: Is your tribe made up of people who “should” on you, or do you have a community who has your back, shares your vision, and is committed to your success?

A tribe is not necessarily your bestie or group of girlfriends. We still need those friends with whom we can share a glass of wine and let loose with. This talk will focus on how to cultivate your success tribe – the people who egg you on, ask the hard questions, believe in you, encourage you, and remind you that you can do it. Yes you can, yes we can.
